Ennis happy ahead of Olympics

Jessica Ennis insists she is in a great position ahead of this summer's Olympic Games, despite the "awful moment" when she realised she had lost a second world title in the space of seven months.

Defending champion Ennis went into the final event of the pentathlon at the World Indoor Championships trailing Olympic heptathlon champion Nataliya Dobrynska by a massive 93 points.

The 26-year-old did all she could by taking almost four and a half seconds off her indoor personal best in winning the 800 metres - and then celebrated after seeing her name flash up in first place on the scoreboard.

However, that was because Dobrynska's score for the 800m had not yet been added to her total, a total which eventually read 5,013 points for a new world record.

"It was an awful, awful moment," said Ennis, who had to settle for silver and a new personal best and British record of 4,965, with Lithuania's Austra Skujyte in third and Russia's Tatyana Chernova - who took Ennis' world heptathlon title in Daegu last August - a distant fifth.

"Obviously you don't know where you are in relation to other people, I just ran as hard as I could and I didn't really know the time or where Nataliya was behind.

"Then I looked at the screen, saw my name in first position and suddenly thought 'Oh, I have won' and it was a great feeling and then it was suddenly snatched away from me in a second and I was devastated."

Despite such disappointment, Ennis could reflect on her second fastest time ever in the 60m hurdles and a new personal best of 14.79m in the shot, with only a best of 6.19m in the long jump proving her downfall.

Asked about the Olympics in London, Ennis added: "I feel in a great position. I am in a much better position than I was this time last year, scoring a personal best and knowing I can come away and make improvements.

"I am not at my limit and obviously there is still room to improve. I am happy and I am progressing and I am going to have a week off and get back into another solid block of training and make those changes and prepare for the summer and hopefully I will be stronger then."
