England's quartet of brothers Alistair and Jonny Brownlee, Jodie Stimpson and Vicky Holland lived up their their favourites tag to comfortably win the first ever Commonwealth Games triathlon mixed relay title.
The team had enjoyed great individual success on Thursday with Brownlee outsprinting younger brother Jonny for a one-two while Stimpson took women’s gold ahead of bronze medallist Holland in the women’s competition.
And the quartet joined up in comprehensive fashion for the team event, comprising a 400m swim, 6km cycle and 1.6km run each, at Strathclyde Country Park on Saturday.
Holland led the team out first while Alistair completed proceedings on the fourth leg, crossing the line for an overall time of 1:13.24.
"It was fantastic. I knew I could run well and I didn’t want to have another sprint like a few weeks ago so I was determined to try and win it on the bike," he said.
"I love the relay as it’s actually really fun and you can see people’s weaknesses and strengths more than in a normal triathlon at times.
"I'm looking forward the Grand Final in Edmonton now, I can't win the world title but it would be nice to win that race. I'm going to spend a few days in Glasgow enjoying the Games first and then it's back to training."
Silver went to South Africa, 49 seconds back, while Australia took third.
Stimpson's individual gold was England's first of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and, with a second now added to her collection, admitted it had been a time to savour.
"It's been an incredible couple of days. We knew the pressure was on us because we were all on the podium for the individual event,” she said.
"However, I'm been in these dream teams before and it's not worked out, so I wasn't hanging the medal around our necks before the race. Things can always go wrong but thankfully we got our tactics spot on."
