England continue London Cup charge with victories

England Hockey's men and women made it four wins from four at the Investec London Cup while day two also saw Scotland women pick up their first victory.

It was Wales women versus Scotland first up at and after heading into the break a goal to the good the latter let rip after half-time, securing a 5-0 win thanks to goals from Catriona Ralph, Nikki Lloyd, Ailsa Wyllie and a quick-fire Vikki Bunce double.

Next it was the turn of England’s women and they too held a narrow advantage at the interval, leading South Africa 1-0 thanks to a goal from Alex Danson.

Shortly after half-time however South Africa leveled as Illse Davids found the net, but Georgie Twigg restored England’s lead just after the hour mark and they held on for their second win in as many matches.

Match-winner Twigg said: “We’re really thrilled with the win, and it’s great to see so many supporters here.

“Now we’ve got a rest day and time to prepare for Saturday against Scotland which we know will be another tough game.”

Scotland and Ireland’s men couldn’t be separated as they drew 1-1, however England had no such worries as they thumped South Africa 7-0.

Ashley Jackson and Nick Catlin, the latter making his 100th appearance, both helped themselves to two goals while Barry Middleton, Simon Mantell and Mark Gleghorne also got in on the act.

Catlin said: "It was an absolute privilege to get my 100th cap, and goals don't come around too often for me so to get a couple was a really good way to celebrate it.

“The crowd have been great here today and we're looking forward to even more people coming out at the weekend to see our games."
