Edwards gets Britain started at World Boxing Championships

Charlie Edwards got Britain’s charge up and running at the AIBA World Boxing Championships with a dominant opening win in the flyweight category.

Edwards advanced to the last 32 with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Olayinka Yusuff of Nigeria, wobbling him in the second and sending him down in the third.

However Warren Baister failed to follow Edwards’ lead as he lost to Russia’s Evgeny Tishchenko on his first outing in the heavyweight category.

Baister had the greater work rate of the two but his opponents cleaner shots were the difference while Scot Stephen Lavelle also lost his first fight.

He was up against Miguel Correa and cut him early on but the Chilean fighter recovered manfully and ran out a 3-0 winner over Lavelle.
