Dowsett down but not out in hour record attempt

Alex Dowsett says his attempt to break the hour record is not dead after the cyclist underwent successful surgery for a broken collar bone on Thursday.

The 26-year-old’s attempt to break Matthias Brandle’s record of 51.852km was thrown into doubt when Dowsett broke his collar bone in a crash near his Essex home.

Dowsett was set to take to the track on February 27 and says he will be trying to make it onto the bike in top shape by then.

“Surgery yesterday went extremely well and I should be out of hospital today or tomorrow,” Dowsett said in a video message.

“I wanted to say thank you to everybody for your support all the messages I’ve had on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have been phenomenal.

“We’re trying our hardest to make the perfect hour on the 27th of February still work, we might have to call it the almost perfect hour.

“We’ll be doing everything we can to make it happen but obviously if it doesn’t recover as much as it should then we will postpone it but it is a case of never say never.”
