Double joy for Britain

The golden glow of the Olympics continued for Great Britain's women with a double success on the opening day of competition at the Track World Cup in Glasgow.

Just off the London Road, opposite Celtic Park and with head coach Shane Sutton present little more than a week after he was knocked off his bike, Britain's succession planning following the 2012 Games began in earnest.

Jess Varnish and Becky James won the hosts' first gold medal of the opening international competition at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in the women's team sprint, before the women's team pursuit squad also triumphed.

Olympic and world champions Laura Trott and Dani King were joined by Elinor Barker, the world junior road time-trial champion, and won in three minutes 21.043 seconds.

Fastest qualifiers Ashlee Ankudinoff, Amy Cure and Melissa Hoskins of Australia had to settle for second in 3mins 22.026secs after being overhauled entering the final kilometre.

In the two-lap event, Varnish and James were fastest qualifiers and clocked 33.428s to win by a handsome margin from Spain's Tania Calvo and Helena Casas (34.102s).

The 4,000-metre men's event, in which Britain crashed in qualifying, was won by Denmark ahead of Germany.

Two-time Olympic team pursuit champion Ed Clancy combined with London 2012 team sprint gold medallists Philip Hindes and Jason Kenny to place second in the shorter event.

Clancy, riding in the position filled by Hoy in August, performed well as the British trio finished in 44.175s in just their second competitive ride in the event following qualifying.

Germany won in 43.887s.
