Christie impresses with Calgary World Cup gold

All the pre-season hard work paid off for Elise Christie after the British short track speed skater took gold at the opening World Cup in Calgary on Sunday.

Christie revealed she had been training with men in the off season in order to try and boost her own medal prospects.

And while she failed to make it past the quarter-finals in the opening 500m race on Saturday, the two-time Olympian bounced back in style in Sunday’s second competition.

Her winning time of 42.565 not only saw her edge out Canadian home favourite Jamie Macdonald and Yara van Kerkhof of the Netherlands, but also saw her pocket a new British record in the process.

The 26-year-old sits atop the standings for the 500m after two races with 10144 points going into next weekend’s next World Cup in Salt Lake City, America. "It's been great to be back here in Calgary," said Christie.

"I haven't had the most straightforward of competitions with a few falls on Friday and Saturday. My coaches and support team worked with me and my equipment overnight and the adjustments paid off."
