Coomes and Buckland skate to Grand Prix bronze in Russia

British pair Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland picked up their first ever figure skating Grand Prix medal after securing ice dance bronze in the Rostelecom Cup in Moscow.

American duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates claimed gold with an overall score of 174.28 while Elena Ilinykh and Ruslan Zhiganshin’s 160.43 was enough to hold off Coomes and Buckland for silver.

The Brits, both 25, had a previous Grand Prix best of fourth which they achieved in the 2011 Cup of China.

But they were sitting in the medal positions at the half way stage in Russia, scoring 59.55 with their short dance routine to place third going into the free dance.

They lifted their performance even more on Saturday, placing second with 98.47 although their overall score of 158.02 was not quite enough to lift the pair, who finished 11th at Sochi 2014, into silver.
