British women qualify for European Water Polo Championships

Great Britain’s women’s water polo team will compete at this summer’s European Championships in Budapest after finishing second in their group A qualifying tournament.

Britain battled with five other teams at thee four-day event in Gouda, the Netherlands over the weekend, bidding for one of the two spots available for the Europeans in Hungary.

And, while losing to the eventual winners from the Netherlands, victories over Ukraine, Israel and Portugal saw Britain take the all-important runners-up spot.

They will now join Group B winners Spain and France, as well as pre-qualified Italy, Russia, Greece and Hungary at the main event, with the draw set to be made in March.

Britain suffered a narrow 9-7 defeat to Spain during the London 2012 Olympics and will be looking to improve on their seventh place finish at the European Championships during the same year.

Captain Rosie Morris said: “We are all really pleased that we’ve qualified again for the European Championship finals and look forward to that challenge in the summer.”
