British speed skaters to compete on home ice

Britain’s short track elite athletes will be taking a break from International action this weekend as they compete in the British Short Track Championships at Nottingham’s National Ice Centre (NIC).

The full GB Short Track squad will be competing in the event including Elise Christie, who recently brought home two bronze medals from the ISU World Cup in Seoul, Korea.

Stuart Horsepool, performance director, said: “The squad have had a great season so far with the team coming home with several World Cup medals and getting plenty of experience under their belts against some of the best skaters in the world.

“The British Championships is a great way to get the skaters competing against each other, which is really important for their training ahead of the remaining international competitions of the season.”

The British Championships will include all age group races from pee wees (under 13s) to seniors, in a variety of distances – 500m, 1000m, 1500m and a 3000m relay – and the public are encouraged to come along to support the athletes over the two-day event.

Horsepool added: “It isn’t very often that the skaters get to compete on home ice and they will not only be doing it once, but twice.

“Next weekend the squad will be competing at the NIC again as they face international elite skaters in the ISU Star Class competition.

“The team are really looking forward to skating at home and it would be great to see lots of spectators cheering them on.”

The British Championships will take place between Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th January, while the ISU Star Class competition will be taking place at the NIC Nottingham for the first time, 9th to 11th January.

The event will give the public an opportunity to watch the elite skaters compete at their home rink in an adrenaline-fuelled, action-packed weekend of elite speed skating.
