Bateson was a unanimous winner over Romanian light flyweight Ovidiu Berceanu, joining Joe Joyce, Andrew Selby and Sam Maxwell from the GB Boxing programme in the quarter-finals.

Scotland lightweight Charlie Flynn made it five Brits through as he beat Miroslav Serban however there was disappointment for four athletes on the GB Boxing programme.

All four left the competition with middleweights Anthony Fowler and Aston Brown unable to win their second fights in Belarus as they fell to Stefan Haertel and Bogdan Juratoni respectively.

Meanwhile heavyweight Warren Baister and bantamweight Gamal Yafai, both fighting for the first time, lost to Aleksei Egorov and Aram Avagyan respectively.
