Baku 2015 recruit volunteer 'Flamekeepers'

The Games Makers were an integral part of London 2012 and the inaugural European Games in Baku later this year will look to recreate that incredible support with more than 12,500 Flamekeepers in Azerbaijan.

The name is to reflect the volunteers’ central role in promoting the spirit of Baku 2015, which runs from 12th-28th June this year, and is also an homage to Azerbaijan, known as the Land of Fire.

Recruitment for Flamekeepers is well underway, with more than 16,000 hopefuls having already applied for a role at a Games that will host over 6,000 athletes competing across 20 sports.

Flamekeepers can expect to enjoy key roles during Baku 2015, including assisting athletes and dignitaries, working at sport competitions, or providing assistance to spectators or the media.

Team GB is set to feature across 14 sports and 20 disciplines at the first ever European Games, with 94 quota places already secured for Baku.

Of those disciplines, seven will have an added significance on the Road to Rio 2016 with each offering Olympic ranking points, qualification standards or automatic qualification for a certain number of athletes.

In addition, Baku provides World Championships qualification for both Boxing and Wrestling, which in turn will offer an opportunity to secure a spot in Brazil.

Baku 2015 also provides the chance for the more junior members of Team GB to gain valuable multi-sport Games experience as well as the prospect of competing against some of Europe’s elite.

Applications for the Baku 2015 volunteer programme are open and more information can be found at www.baku2015.com
