Charlie Maddock wrote her name into the history books as she became the first-ever European Games taekwondo gold medallist with a golden-point victory over Serbian Tijana Bogdanovic in the women’s -49kg final.
After squeezing through her preliminary round by beating Ukraine’s Iryna Romoldanova 8-7, Maddock was in fine form as she breezed into the showpiece.
Waiting for her there was reigning junior European and world champion Bogdanovic, but 19-year-old Maddock was not overawed, leading 4-1 after the first two minutes.
After the second round Maddock still led 8-5 but in a frantic finish Bogdanovic levelled proceeding at 9-9 to force a golden point.
But Maddock didn’t panic, holding her nerve and landing a punch to claim Team GB’s second gold medal of Baku 2015.
