Allen secures Rio quota place with World Champs skeet silver

Elena Allen admitted she had to pinch herself in amazement as she picked up a women’s skeet silver medal at the Shooting World Championships in Granada yesterday, securing Team GB a 2016 Rio Olympics quota place in the process.

Monday’s action kicked off in style as the combined qualifying scores of Allen, Amber Hill and Sarah Gray was enough to secure Great Britain a first ever women’s skeet team gold.

But there was plenty more to celebrate as Allen progressed to the individual gold medal match and walked away with silver after losing to Brandy Drozd of the USA by a single score.

A second gold might have escaped her grasp but there was no wiping the smile off Allen’s face after she secured Great Britain another shooting quota place for the Rio Olympics, following on from Ed Ling’s silver medal in the men’s trap.

"I'm ever so pleased to get the silver - I did not want another bronze medal," said Allen, who won bronze in Lima in 2013.

"And getting the quota place for the Olympics is fantastic.

"It's been tough, during training it gets extremely stressful as the competition nears but I'm so pleased with how I handled the pressure.”
