Birmingham’s Wilf O’Reilly won 500m and 1000m short track speed skating gold at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary when it was held as a demonstration sport.

He won overall World Championship silver in 1990 before completing arguably the finest moment of his career 12 months later by taking overall gold at the 1991 Worlds in Sydney.

Wilf crashed out of both the 500m and 1000m events at the 1994 Winter Olympics, protesting about being forced to race with a damaged blade, but was awarded an MBE in 1997.
