Whitlock spearheads Britain at European Championships

Double Olympic gold medallist Max Whitlock will headline a star-studded British gymnastics squad at next month's European Championships in Glasgow.

Whitlock is joined by Commonwealth champions James Hall, Dom Cunningham and Courtney Tulloch in the men's team, whilst Joe Fraser returns from injury to complete the line-up. And 25-year-old Whitlock has fond memories of the city where he won his maiden world pommel horse title in 2015. "Competing in Glasgow brings back amazing memories for me from both the Commonwealth Games and the 2015 World Championships," he said. "I'm looking forward to getting back out in the Hydro Arena and showing the home crowd what I can do."

But Whitlock was keen to stress the strength of his teammates as they compete for European success.

He added: "Every gymnast in the British team has proven themselves on the biggest stage and as a team I'm confident that we can be successful again against Europe's best."

In the women's team, two-time European bars champion Becky Downie competes alongside Commonwealth gold medallists Alice Kinsella and Georgia-Mae Fenton, whilst British champion Kelly Simm and Commonwealth silver medallist Lucy Stanhope will also feature.

"It's always an honour to be selected to represent Great Britain but this time round feels extra special because I'm so grateful to be finally healthy and doing what I love again," said Downie.

"I'm really looking forward to being back on the competition floor with the team and the fact it's a home country European Championships makes it even more exciting."

Gymnasts will compete for individual and team titles in the new-look European Championships, which features athletics, cycling, golf and rowing events among others, and is co-hosted by Glasgow and Berlin.

The European Championships will take place from 2-12 August at Glasgow's Hydro Arena.
