Whitlock looks back on another year to remember

Max Whitlock admits he will be disappointed to see the back of 2013 - but he equally can't wait for 2014.

Gymnast Whitlock, who won team and pommel bronze at the London 2012 Olympics, has continued his podium form this year, winning silver at the World Championships and claiming his first individual gold at the European Championship in the floor discipline.

And the 20-year old acknowledges the expectation on him is now sky high, especially following the retirement of Britain's most successful gymnast, Beth Tweddle, following last year's Games.

“The pressure has definitely changed since London," he said.

"There’s now more of an expectation on me to perform well. I now want to go to every competition and try and stay as chilled as I can and enjoy the experience and hopefully show some good routines.

“This season has been amazing. The whole year has been unbelievable for me coming off the back of the Olympics with the results I got there. To get the British and the English championship titles was amazing, they’re titles that mean a lot to me. And then the European and World Championships, to get medals in both of them was amazing.

“The bronze at London 2012 helped me a lot in confidence and experience. Every competition that I do I look to gain experience from it and hopefully I can use that in future competitions."

Whitlock made his major championship debut at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, winning team and pommel silver and taking bronze on the horizontal bars.

But he is taking nothing for granted, despite two years of proven podium performances.

“British Gymnastics is a strong team," he added.

"It’s very very hard at the moment to even qualify for the team as the gymnasts are so strong but I’m hoping to go to the Europeans, Commonwealths and Worlds, so hopefully 2014 can be a busy year for me.

“I would love to get a gold at the Commonwealth Games. That’s what every sports person is aiming for and I’m no different so hopefully I can keep working hard in the gym and prove myself.

“I definitely want to keep practising that [the routine he did at the World Championships]. Every competition that I can perform that in adds to my experience and hopefully it can be perfected and ready for Rio 2016.”
