Whelan claims strong sixth at World University Games

Two-time Olympic gymnast Hannah Whelan secured a strong sixth place in the all-around competition at the World University Games in Kazan.

Whelan, who was part of the British team that finished sixth at London 2012, produced a stand-out showing on the beam, her favoured apparatus, scoring an impressive 14.100.

Meanwhile, James Higgins and Bryony Page won the national trampolining titles in Birmingham.

Higgins is now a five-time British champion, though this was his first win for the two years, while Page beat the challenge of London 2012 Olympian Kat Driscoll, claiming top spot by a margin of just .120 points.

“I’m very happy; I really didn’t expect to win," she said.

"There were a few mistakes but I recovered well and the judges saw that. I’ve been competing as a senior for a while and getting podium places so to now finally be crowned the British champion feels amazing.”
