Westley claims GB's first World Cup bronze of season

European champion Ryan Westley recovered from an early mistake to seal Great Britain's first Canoe Slalom World Cup medal of the 2018 season.

Westley, competing in the men’s C1 event that he also won at the Europeans in Prague at the start of the month, touched the second gate in his final run but held on to claim bronze in Slovakia.

The 24-year-old came into the final as the second fastest qualifier from the semi-finals earlier in the day in Liptovsky Mikulas.

David Florence – a three-time Olympic silver medallist for Team GB – failed to make the final however as he ended up 12th in the semis.

But Westley showed fine powers of recovery to shake off his early error in his final run and crossed the line with the second fastest time behind hometown competitor Alexander Slafkovsky.

Germany’s Sideris Tasiadis – the final competitor – produced a storming run to top the pile and leave Westley to settle for bronze – not that the youngster was that disappointed.

"I was sitting on the start line thinking about getting off to a nice steady start and but then I made a mistake," he said.

"I was thinking, even if I pick up a fifth, it's a nice world ranking point. So when I crossed the line and saw I'd managed to sneak onto the podium I was really happy."

Elsewhere, Mallory Franklin was 10th in the women's K1W final.
