This Week in Olympic Sport: March 10-16

British short track speed skater Elise Christie will return to the ice this week set on enjoying herself after a Winter Olympics to forget as we preview the sporting action of the next seven days.

Christie was tipped to win Britain’s first short track medal in two decades at Sochi 2014 but instead was to effectively suffer three disqualifications in the 500m, 1000m and 1500m events.

However she will get a chance to prove that she is capable of medaling on the global stage as the World Championships take place in Montreal this week.

That will close the short track season while a host of other winter sports will pack up ahead of the summer this week – namely speed skating, alpine skiing, Nordic combined and cross-country skiing.

Speed skating’s World Cup Final takes places in Heerenveen and alpine skiing’s in Lenzerheide while cross-country skiing and Nordic combined both take in Falun.

Two women’s ski jumping World Cup events will also be staged in the Swedish city and there is freestyle skiing in the country in Are as well as across Scandinavia in Voss in Norway.

There’s snowboarding Veysonnaz and La Molina while biathlon’s World Cup tour heads to Kontiolahti and the World Women’s Curling Championships begin in Canada.

Eve Muirhead’s Olympic bronze-medal winning rink won’t be Scotland’s representatives however, that honour going to Kerry Barr who faces Latvia first up.

And, away from the world of winter sports, the first Diving World Series leg is scheduled for Beijing with Olympic bronze medallist Tom Daley among the athletes due to compete.
