This week in Olympic sport: August 12-18

It may only be August but winter is about to descend with the globe’s finest skiers and snowboarders taking to the slopes in New Zealand for the very first World Cup of the Olympic season. We give a flavour of what’s happening this week below:

New Zealand’s South Island will play host to the likes of British hopefuls Jenny Jones, Jamie Nichols and James Woods as part of its Winter Games while reigning Olympic champions Torah Bright and Shaun White are also set to be seen.

The World Athletics Championship continue throughout the week, culminating on Sunday, with Britain and Mo Farah looking to build on his 10,000m gold in Moscow while canoe slalom returns for World Cup action in Slovenia.

Hockey begins its European Championships for both men and women simultaneously in Belgium with England fielding teams in both and Scotland boosting the British chances in the ladies competition in Boom.
