Varnish and James claim gold for Britain

Great Britain's Jess Varnish and Becky James won the first gold medal of the opening international competition at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome with victory in the women's team sprint at the Track World Cup in Glasgow.

Just off the London Road, opposite Celtic Park and with head coach Shane Sutton present little more than a week after he was knocked off his bike, Britain's succession planning following the 2012 Olympics began in earnest.

The British duo were fastest qualifiers and clocked 33.428 seconds to win by a handsome margin from Spain's Tania Calvo and Helena Casas, who finished in 34.102secs.

Varnish, who used to race with the now-retired Victoria Pendleton, and the 20-year-old Commonwealth medallist from Wales reigned supreme with a comprehensive triumph which bodes well for February's Track Cycling World Championships in Minsk.
