Team GB Sochi skaters lead Europeans squad

Team GB’s Winter Olympic squad will lead the charge at the European Figure Skating Championships 2014.

Six skaters who have been selected for Sochi 2014 are included in the National Ice Skating Association’s (NISA) team heading to the European Championships taking place from 13-19 January in Budapest, Hungary.

British Ice Dance champions Penny Coomes (Maidenhead) and Nick Buckland (Nottingham) and eight-times British Pairs champions Stacey Kemp (Preston) and David King (Carlisle) are selected.

Winter Olympian Jenna McCorkell (Coleraine) who is the single most successful female ice skater ever to hail from Northern Ireland, will compete in the Ladies event while four-time senior British National Champion Matt Parr (Newcastle) has been picked in the Men’s event.

The Sochi skaters will be joined by newly crowned British Pairs champions Amani Fancy and Christopher Boyadji and Carter Jones and Richard Sharpe, who finished runner up to Penny Coomes and Nick Buckland in the 2013 British Championships.

Hilary Selby, performance director for NISA, said: “We are delighted to name such a strong squad for the European Championships combining youth and experience.

“Taking place just a month before the Winter Olympics, the event will form a key part of training preparations for our Sochi skaters.

“The selections are based on the formula of the highest international score achieved in an ISU recognised international competition during the 2013-14 season, plus two times the British Championship score.

“We would like to wish all the selected skaters the very best for a successful performance at this Championships and for their continued skating career.”
