In a must win game on day four at the Champery Curling Arena, Team GB kept their nerve to produce a mature and disciplined display to beat Slovenia 6-2.
The game was nip and tuck throughout but as the game went on Team GB applied the pressure and forced the Slovenians into a mistake in the sixth end to go 4-2 up. They made sure in the seventh end to finish the game 6-2 and give confidence ahead of their final game against New Zealand.
Speaking after the game Team GB's skip Ross Craik said: "It was a good performance. We made all the shots we needed to and we forced them into making more difficult shots.
“We wanted to communicate better as a team coming into this game and I think we did and it benefitted our play overall.”
Going into tomorrow’s game against New Zealand, Hannah Farries was pleased with the performance: “We made the right decisions and made some good shots. It’s really pleasing to get that second win. We’ll go into tomorrow’s game [against New Zealand] and hope to play like we did tonight, keep that communication going and try and get that win.”
It was day four of the alpine skiing at Les Diablerets, with Robert Holmes and Jack Cunningham returning to action in the giant slalom. Holmes secured a top twenty finish in the event, placing 20
in a time of 2:12:28 – +5.97 behind eventual winner Philip Hoffmann of Austria.
Seventeen-year-old Holmes started bib no.37 and rapidly made his way up the leaderboard to be in 23
position after run one. He then made up even more ground during run two, moving up three places to finish in a very respectable 20
place, and he was extremely pleased with how his day panned out:
“Today’s been great – to be competing at the event in the first place is amazing. I’ve worked so hard to be selected for Team GB over the last ten years and especially the last two months. I’ve been all over Europe every single weekend – competing in a crazy amount of races.
“I was happy with my first run – I came through the top split and I was in front which was brilliant. Coming from a dry slope background, it was kind of hard to maintain and I’m still working on the steep hill elements of the course, but it was a good start to the race. I really tried my best to attack it, so it’s great to finish, especially after crashing out in the Super G.
“My GS (giant slalom) is actually quite weak at the moment and my technique still needs a little bit of work, but I feel like I’ve done well to the best of my ability today.”
Teammate Jack Cunningham recorded his second DNF of the week, but will look to bounce back in tomorrow’s slalom event. Daisi Daniels and Sophie Foster will also return to action in the women’s slalom, in what promises to be a busy day for our alpine skiers.
Amy Robery and Mirren Foy both secured a spot in the last four of the mixed country 3-on-3 ice hockey competition at the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games, following a hard-fought last day of the preliminary round.
Robery’s Team Black will be seeded first going into tomorrow’s semi-final against Team Brown, following a record of six wins out of seven. Foy’s Team Blue go into the last four as the second seeds, despite only registering one win on the final day of the round robin, they will face Team Yellow in the semi-finals.
Elsewhere, Abby Rowbotham’s Team Red managed to finish the preliminary round strongly, with back to back victories against Team Yellow (8-5) and table toppers Team Blue (5-4), while Jessie Taylor’s Team Green just missed out on a top four spot, finishing in fifth place overall.
Evan Nauth and Mack Stewart will be on opposing sides in the men’s semi-finals, as Nauth’s Team Brown and Stewart’s Team Red both booked their respective pathways through to the knockout stages of competition. Nauth and Stewart’s showdown will take place at 12:30 GMT tomorrow afternoon, where one of them is guaranteed to take to the ice in Wednesday’s gold medal match.
Meanwhile, Carter Hamill’s Team Blue finished the competition without registering a victory, following further defeats to Team Brown and Team Red.
Theo Collins was back out on the ice at Lake St. Moritz today, this time in the 1,500m event. Collins, who recorded a personal best in yesterday’s 500m, came 32
in a time 2:09:43. The teenager has two events left to complete at Lausanne 2020 – the mixed country team sprint (Wednesday) and the mass start (Thursday).
