Team GB Preview: Day Three at AYOF

Team GB are in action across seven sports on day three of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF). First up are the triathletes who will be hoping to emulate the success of London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Jonny Brownlee who won gold at the previous AYOF in 2009.

Sophie Coldwell (Nottingham), Georgia Taylor-Brown (Leeds), Marc Austin (Glasgow) and Gordon Benson (Leeds) will all compete in the individual event at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith.

London 2012 Olympian weightlifter Zoe Smith is also in action on day three, competing in the women’s 63kg category. The AYOF is Smith’s last youth event before she looks to improve on her bronze medal from Delhi 2010 at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games next year.

Smith said: “I’m looking forward to the competition tomorrow. Of course I would love to medal but the Chinese are here which will make it a tough event. There are also some really strong junior lifters competing. The AYOF will be my last youth event so I am hoping I will be able to end on a high.”

After teammates Michael Bamsey and Larissa Sykes medalled on day one of the shooting competition Ross Shears is hoping to join them on the medal podium when the three shooters return

to the Sydney International Shooting Centre to compete in the air rifle event.

Also in action on day two of the shooting competition is UK number two senior ranked skeet shooter Sian Bruce. Kristian Callaghan and Dan Tarrant take to the range competing in the rapid fire and 50m trap respectively.

Medals are also up for grabs in the diving competition with Josh Dowd and Freddie Woodward competing in the boy's 3m Springboard, Woodward also competes in the 3m synchronised with Sam Thornton. Shanice Lobb and Georgia Ward compete in the girls 10m platform.

Team GB’s golfers return to the Twin Creeks course for round two of the golf competition where they will once again battle the scorching Australian sunshine as they look to build upon a promising start in both the team and individual men’s and women’s event.

Team GB Golf Coach Tegwen Matthews said: “All the players felt they left some shots out there, including Ashton Turner who bogeyed the last hole in his scintillating round of 64! With three more rounds to complete, there is plenty of opportunity for them to maximise their performance and they are just itching to get out there and do just that!”

Team GB rhythmic and artistic gymnasts begin their competition at the Sports Centre, Sydney Olympic Park tomorrow. Artistic gymnasts Emily Crowe, Teal Grindle, Tyesha Mattis and Amy Tinkler compete in the women’s team event, their GB counterparts Dominick Cunningham, James Hall, Courtney Tulloch and Nile Wilson are also in action in the men’s team event.

Tulloch said: “Training has been going very well and I have got loads of new routines so I am looking forward to putting them into practice. Team gold and plenty of medals for Team GB in the all around and individual apparatus is our target and we are all up for it!”

Competing for Team GB in the rhythmic gymnastics event are Lauren Brash, Tyler Brummit, Tiola Gleeson and Helena Stiles.

Both Team GB’s men’s and women’s 3x3 basketball teams will return to Darling Harbour for the final four matches in their round robin competition. The men will be aiming to maintain their one hundred percent winning record while the women are looking to secure their first victory of the competition.
