Taylor bows out to world number one

Lochend lightweight Josh Taylor was the first Great Britain boxer to taste defeat when he was well beaten by world number one and former world champion Domenico Valentino.

Taylor performed admirably against the veteran Italian but was worn down by his opponent's ringcraft and eventually fell 15-10.

Tearful Taylor, who won silver at the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010, indicated he would remain amateur with the aim of representing Scotland in Glasgow in 2014.

Taylor said: "I'm obviously incredibly disappointed after all the hard work I put in, because I really wanted to build on the silver medal I received in Delhi.

"Valentino deserved his win, and now I've got to reassess and reflect on what happened. But I am going to go to Glasgow and go one better than I did in Delhi."
