Spence up against strong field in GB ranking event

Former world champion Mhairi Spence will return to action this weekend for the second of three Pentathlon GB ranking competitions to be staged in the build up to the World Cup Series.

London 2012 Olympian Spence will be among a strong female field that will compete over Olympic distances rather than the longer, endurance-style event of a month ago.

Joe Evans and Kate French topped the men’s and women’s points list in December and they will again be on the start line this weekend at Millfield School alongside 2012 world champion Spence and reigning world champion and Olympic silver medallist Samantha Murray who was fifth in December.

The third event will take place on February 3 with all three helping Pentathlon GB national performance director Jan Bartu and his team of coaches make decisions on which athletes to select for the World Cup Series which begin in Sarasota, USA, next month.

“I am sure this will be a strong competition,” he said. “We will be able to see people who didn’t compete a month ago and, for the first time, we are going to stage the youth, junior and senior ranking competitions together so we expect a good turnout of parents, friends and family to watch the action and the younger athletes will be able to see what performance at the top end is all about.”
