Sinden and Williams win Taekwondo Grand Prix medals in Rome

There was double success for British taekwondo on the opening day of Rome’s World Taekwondo World Grand Prix as Bradly Sinden and Lauren Williams both claimed bronze medals.

Doncaster’s Sinden, competing in the -68kg category, was recently crowned European champion and delivered an excellent quarter-final performance to beat 2015 world champion Jaouad Achab of Belgium.

Sinden, a Grand Prix silver medallist in London last season, faced Russian star Aleksey Denisenko in the semi-finals but lost out 18-12.

“I reckon I put in some good performances,” said Sinden.

“I had hoped for the win but just got caught at the end.

“But I can take plenty of positives from the day. I have been developing really well as an athlete.

“I just need to keep pushing, getting more medals and climbing the rankings.”

Sinden’s teammate Christian McNeish was attempting to win a sixth successive tournament but was also bettered by Denisenko, losing out on golden point in the last 16.

British taekwondo also tasted success in the women’s draw as Welsh star Williams defeated Ruth Gbagbi en route to a bronze.

Williams’ bouts against reigning world title holder Gbagbi are usually eye-catching and this one didn’t disappoint, as the European gold medallist won on golden point in the -67kg category.

Unfortunately for Williams her bid for another title ended in a 23-11 defeat to French rival, Weit Henin.

“I am gutted,” said Williams, 19.

“I had two strong performances in the last 16 and the quarter-finals though I started off poorly.

“On reflection, it has been a decent day considering the restriction I have had in training due to a couple of hamstring injuries.

“I am looking forward now to some time off. Now is the perfect chance to re-charge, rest-up and get ready for later in the season.”

Day two in Rome sees European champion Jade Jones in action, with Bianca Walkden, Rachelle Booth and Hassan Haider also competing. Sportsbeat 2018
