Sherrington claims submission win

Royal Marine Chris Sherrington moved into the second round of the men's heavyweight judo over 100kgs with a submission win against Australian Jake Andrewartha.

British Judo finally ended a 12-year weight for an Olympic medal when Gemma Gibbons won silver on Thursday.

ExCeL's North Arena 2 was again in full voice as the Edinburgh fighter took to the Tatami, and the 28-year-old soon manoeuvred into a stranglehold, forcing his opponent to tap out.

Veteran Karina Bryant, five-time medallist at the World Championships, beat Sonia Asselah of Algeria in her first fight in the women's over-78kgs.

Bryant, 33, battled back from a neck injury to win a bronze at the 2012 European Championships in Russia and was one of the few Team GB fighters to have qualified automatically for the Olympics instead of needing a host nation place.

The Algerian was soon on the defensive and picked up a Shido warning as chants of "GB" rang out around the arena.

Bryant rose to the occasion, recording an ippon score to move into the last 16, where she will face third seed and 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Lucija Polavder of Slovakia.
