Sharp and McColgan keeping it in the family on the Gold Coast

The Commonwealth Games will be a truly family affair for Scottish runners Lynsey Sharp and Eilish McColgan, with both of their parents having won Commonwealth medals in the past.

McColgan and Sharp both come from good stock, with both of their parents both having competed at the Commonwealth Games.

And two of them also made it onto the podium.

Sharp’s father Cameron won a total of five Commonwealth Games medals, including 4x100m gold for Scotland at the Edmonton 1978 Games.

He also racked up four bronze medals from two other Games, while Liz McColgan won two gold medals in the 10,000m at the 1986 and 1990 Games.

Sharp will run in the 800m on the Gold Coast, having won a silver last time out at Glasgow 2014.

Her mother, Carol Sharp (nee Lightfoot), raced at the Brisbane 1982 Games, making the 800m semi-final, in the QEII Stadium.

Sharp junior raced in Brisbane on Wednesday, on a track in the shadow of the QEII Stadium, as a tune up for next week’s Games, but her mum struggled to remember the location.

“My mum questioned whether she had competed here because she said the track was now coloured blue,” said the 27-year-old.

“I said, 'that was 36 years ago. This is the stadium'.”

Sharp’s focus is now turning to the Games proper, with athletics not beginning until Sunday, April 9, but she has already set her sights high.

"I'm up against some strong competition, but I've been in the mix with the top Commonwealth athletes in the past and I'd like to win a medal."

Fellow Team Scotland runner McColgan is coached by her mum and will run the 1500m and 5,000m on the Gold Coast, following on from her sixth-place finish in the 3,000m steeplechase at Glasgow 2014.

But it seems the offspring of her athletic parents has been shielded from their success as she looks to forge her own path.

“My mum and dad hid me away from their athletics past as they didn't want to push me into the sport,” said the 27-year-old.

“The only race [of mum's] I've watched was the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo [in which she won 10,000m gold] and that was because a journalist sat me down to watch it.

“Mum has been my coach throughout my athletics career and I'm lucky to have her.”
