Rutherford back to his best with outright British record

Olympic champion Greg Rutherford can call himself the outright British long jump record holder after smashing his personal best in San Diego.

Rutherford, who won Olympic long jump gold as part of Super Saturday at London 2012, leapt 8.51m for the record plus victory in America.

That was a full 16 centimetres better than the British record he jumped at the exact same venue prior to London 2012 and shared with Chris Tomlinson.

Rutherford claimed gold at the Olympics with an effort of 8.31m while last year he managed a season best of 8.22m after struggling with injury.
