Rio-bound Allen sticking to what she knows

Elena Allen is determined to do it her way in the build-up to next year's Rio Olympics.

Allen, 42, was confirmed on the six-strong Team GB Olympic shooting squad this week and will take part in the women's skeet alongside 18-year old Amber Hill, the European Games gold medallist.

She competed at the London Olympics, finishing 12th, and insists she's ready to put those lessons into practice, inspired by her silver medal at last year's World Championships, where she also took team gold alongside Hill and Sarah Gray.

"I didn't perform quite as I would have liked in London," said Allen.

"This time around I need to structure my training in the way that I know works best for me.

"I know it doesn't suit me to train a lot before an event, before London I just trained and trained and trained and left my best form on the practice range.

"I don't need to be on the range shooting lots of targets in the days before an Olympics, I need to train, relax and then compete."

Allen's preparations have been disrupted by a recent training injury - she hobbled around this week's team announcement with her foot in a bright purple cast that matched her trainers.

"It's the same injury as David Beckham once had," she added.

"I did it skipping believe it or not - perhaps I should learn a lesson from that! It's the best time of year for it to happen. The cast will soon be off and it won't cause any problems with my preparations."

Allen admits she is inspired by Hill – the youngest member of the team and 24 years her junior.

In addition to this summer's impressive gold in Baku, the youngster is currently ranked number one in Europe and also won gold at the recent World Cup Final in Cyprus.

"To be named as an Olympian is an incredible honour and I'm getting more confident I'm able to win these competitions," said Hill.

"I've never been to an Olympics but I've had the experience of the European Games, when you are part of a big team with lots of different sports, which will be really helpful. I'm going in to win."
