Olympic24: Watson secures Rio qualification but Murray made to wait in Paris

British number two Heather Watson booked her place in round two of the French Open, and secured qualification for Rio 2016, but Andy Murray was made to wait after his first round match was suspended due to bad light with the Brit two sets to one down. Here’s our review of the last 24 hours:

British number two Watson secured qualification for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in style with a first-round victory over American Nicole Gibbs at the French Open.

In a match blighted by terrible weather conditions, the 24-year-old came from behind to draw level with Gibbs, before rain stopped play on Sunday evening with the score at 5-7, 6-2, 1-2.

Day two’s action finally got back underway midway through the afternoon, with Watson preying on her opponent’s nerves despite being a break down to take five games on the bounce and claim a 6-2 victory in the deciding set.

“It was very difficult,” Watson said. “I think the conditions, with it being very rainy, suited her game style more than mine and we had a lot of rain delays.”

World number two Andy Murray trails 3-6 3-6 6-0 4-2 in the French Open first round at Roland Garros to 37-year-old Czech qualifier Radek Stepanek. Bad light caused the match to be suspended on Monday and it will resume today.

After losing the first two sets, Murray fought back to seal the third set to love and will be a break up in the fourth when the match restarts.

Also at the French Open, fellow Brit Kyle Edmund overcame Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-6 6-7 7-5 6-1 to progress to round two. Edmund will face either John Isner or Australian John Millman in the next round.

Noami Broady lost to Coco Vandeweghe 6-4 3-6 6-3 on her Roland Garros debut. Read more here.

Samantha Murray and Joanna Muir claimed silver in the women's relay at the World Championships on Monday to continue Pentathlon GB's incredible recent success at the meet on the first day of the 2016 competition.

The duo sat in the top three throughout the day, with former World Champion Murray combining with debutant Muir to form a fantastic team performance in Moscow.

They had set the standard high in the pool, finishing second behind Russia, before 19 defeats in the fencing saw them slip into bronze medal position.

A perfect ride in the equestrian saw the pair pick up a maximum 300 points and move a place up into second, where they remained to finish just behind victors Germany.

"It was a very positive start for the team, and not just for the girls competing," said Pentathlon GB Performance Director Jan Bartu.

"Hopefully there will be a positive vibe throughout the whole team, including the men arriving later.

"We didn't have any great expectations for this relay competition; we just wanted to brush off any anxiety ahead of the individual competition."

Just 73 days remain until this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio, but there is still plenty keeping our Team GB athletes busy.

Whether that is attempting to qualify or fine-tuning preparations for those already selected, no-one is resting on their laurels.

Each Monday we will look back at what our athletes have been getting up to during the last week and who to keep an eye on over the coming seven days.

Geraint Thomas has signed a contract extension to remain with Team Sky ahead of the team's bid to win a fourth Tour de France in July.

The 29-year-old Welshman has played an important role of Team Sky since its inception in 2010, and has been integral in their continuing success in the cycling world.

The two-time Olympic team pursuit champion switched his focus to stage races this season, going on to win the Volta ao Algarve in February before claiming his first Paris-Nice title the following month.

"Signing again was an easy decision," said Thomas. "Team Sky feels like home. From the other riders to the staff, I love it here.

"I've only really just started when it comes to trying to win stage races. I'm learning all the time about how to get in the best shape for them and how to lead a team.”

Team Principal Sir Dave Brailsford is thrilled that Thomas has extended his stay with the team, insisting that the future is bright in the next chapter of his career.

"He's a great ambassador for Team Sky, cycling and, let's not forget, Wales," he said.

“I still believe the best is yet to come from Geraint and we will enjoy supporting him to see just how far he can go."
