Olympic24: Murray ready for Gasquet and hockey welcome back familiar faces

World number two Andy Murray will face Richard Gasquet in the French Open quarter-finals later today, weather permitting, while in Amsterdam the Great Britain women's hockey team welcome back some familiar faces to take on the Netherlands. Here's our review of the last 24 hours:

Andy Murray admits he’s expecting a tough reception when he faces Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the French Open quarter-finals later today.

The match is scheduled to take place today but heavy rain meant no play was possible on Monday, and with further delays expected Murray may have to wait for his opportunity to progress.

The British number one has never lost to Gasquet in a Grand Slam.

He said: “I’m pumped to be in the quarters of a slam. The atmosphere will be tough but I don’t mind that.

“I’ve played a number of times against French players here in difficult atmospheres and I managed OK, so I’m sure I’ll be fine.”

Great Britain women’s head coach Danny Kerry will be keeping an eager eye on his returning players after naming a 20-strong team for this week’s two-test series against World Champions the Netherlands.

Laura Unsworth, Lily Owsley and Alex Danson all return to the team following recent injuries as the women step up their preparations for the Hockey Champions Trophy and Olympic Games.

They will take on the Netherlands twice at Athena Hockey Club, Amsterdam, with the first game today and second on June 2.

There are also a number of potential milestones with Hannah Macleod in line to win her 50th cap for Great Britain while Sam Quek is one away from 100 international caps with captain Kate Richardson-Walsh needing just one more goal to bring up her half century in international hockey.

Kerry said: “It is good to have Laura Unsworth, Alex Danson and Lily Owsley back after long periods of injury. It will be good to have competitive match play to help bring them up to match speed.

“The women have been excellent in their preparation for many months now and we’re looking forward to testing that against the number one ranked team in the world on their home soil.”

Scottish runner Andrew Butchart continued his quest to reach Rio 2016 by winning the Vitality London 10,000m on Monday.

Butchart, 24, set a personal best time of 28 minutes and 28 seconds, comfortably ahead of defending champion Andy Vernon (29:04) in the event which doubles as the British 10km Championships.

The Scot took more than a second off his previous best 10km time, a week after achieving a second Olympic qualifying stand in the 5km.

"I knew I could run fast, it was just a matter of getting it done,” he said.

“I am really fit, I am doing sessions a lot faster than I anticipated beforehand and today again I exceeded my expectations so I am really happy.”

England number one pair Chris and Gabby Adcock resume their Race to Dubai in the mixed doubles of the Indonesia Open in Jakata this week.

The Adcocks go in as seventh seeds at the Istora Stadium and have their first game today against Alfian Prasetya and Annisa Saufika.

The duo are in the top half of the draw meaning they could meet Chinese rivals, and top seeds, Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei in the last eight.

Just 66 days remain until this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio, but there is still plenty keeping our Team GB athletes busy.

Whether that is attempting to qualify or fine-tuning preparations for those already selected, no-one is resting on their laurels.

Each Monday we will look back at what our athletes have been getting up to during the last week and who to keep an eye on over the coming seven days. Read more click here.
