Olympic24: Konta progresses at Wimbledon as Team GB name two more squads

Johanna Konta has reached the second round of Wimbledon for the first time, while two more Team GB squads for Rio 2016 were announced.

Johanna Konta has reached the second round of Wimbledon for the first time, while on Wednesday there were two Team GB squad announcements for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Here’s our review of the last 24 hours:

Johanna Konta claimed her first-ever Wimbledon singles victory by beating Puerto Rico's Monica Puig 6-1 7-5 in a match which took more than 24 hours to complete due to the adverse weather conditions. Konta will now face Canada's Eugenie Bouchard in the second round while British number two Heather Watson will come back for a third day to complete her first round match. Watson won the first set against Germany's Annika Beck 6-3 but dropped the second without winning a game and was 1-0 down in the decider when the rain came. Elsewhere, Dan Evans was heading into a first set tie-break against Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov before play was postponed, while the fairytale run of Marcus Willis -  the world number 772 - ended as he lost 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 to seven-time champion Roger Federer on Centre Court. Andy Murray is also in action today as he faces Chinese Tapei's Yen-Hsun Lu in their second round match. Read Konta’s views on her win here.

Rebekah Tiler and Sonny Webster have been named by the British Olympic Association as the two weightlifters who will represent Team GB at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Tiler will compete in the women's 69kg category, while Webster will feature in the men's 94kg division.

It will be a first Olympic Games for the duo, who were both crowned British Champion in their respective weight categories earlier this month.

Two years ago, Tiler finished fourth at the 2014 Commonwealth Games – aged just 15 – and earlier this year she won three bronze medals at the European Championships in Norway.

And commenting on her selection, the Keighley lifter said: "I am so excited and honoured to be representing Team GB in Rio this summer; it's a dream come true and something I've wanted ever since I got into the sport.”

Naomi Folkard and Patrick Huston have been named as the two archers who will represent Team GB at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

It will be a fourth Olympic Games appearance for Folkard, who has competed at Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Meanwhile, for 20-year-old Huston it will be a first Olympic Games appearance after competing in the individual and team events at last year's World Championships in Copenhagen.

Huston secured a quota place at Rio 2016 for Team GB with a third-place finish at this year's European Championships in Nottingham and is placing high expectations on himself for the Olympic Games.

"I'll be going to Rio aiming for gold, I'm not just a participant," said Huston. "Whatever the outcome, my first Olympic experience is going to be a memory of a lifetime.”

Jessica Ennis-Hill will return to the scene of her London 2012 Olympic triumph when she competes in the 100m hurdles and long jump at the Anniversary Games next month.

Ennis-Hill famously won heptathlon gold on Super Saturday at the Olympic Stadium four years ago and as preparations to defend her title in Rio ramp up, she will be looking for strong performances at the Anniversary Games from July 22-23.

In the 100m hurdles on Friday 22, the 30-year-old will square off against second-fastest woman ever Kendra Harrison, 2013 World Champion Brianna Rollins and European Champion Tiffany Porter.

She will then compete in the long jump a day later, aiming to build on a personal-best leap of 6.63m recorded during the IAAF World Combined Events Challenge Meeting in Ratingen, Germany, last weekend.

Ennis-Hill won the heptathlon in Ratingen with 6733 points, the second highest score in the world this year, and is looking forward to competing in front of a vociferous crowd at the Anniversary Games.

Great Britain’s leading men’s singles player Rajiv Ouseph is hoping his London 2012 disappointment can help him make at least the quarter-final stage at this summer’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Ouseph was one of eight players selected to represent Team GB in Brazil when the squad was announced at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes on Monday.

This will be the world number 14’s second Olympic Games and the 29-year-old is looking to improve on his London 2012 showing after exiting at the group stage four years ago.

“Being part of London 2012 was really exciting. I don’t think I performed as well as I would have liked to so I can use that energy and experience from last time in a positive way to get a better result in Rio and perform to where I am capable of,” Ouseph said.

“My aim is to get to at least the quarter-finals. The men’s singles is a really tough event and there are a lot of strong players in there.

“If I play to my capabilities then I think I could get to the quarter-finals and then see what happens.”
