Olympic24: Ennis-Hill set for Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix

Jessica Ennis-Hill puts Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix in diary and Andy Murray targets history in 2016. Here's our review of the last 24 hours.

Jessica Ennis-Hill says she will kick-start year by taking part in the Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix in February.

The world and Olympic heptathlon champion enjoyed a whirlwind 2015 that saw her return to competition and take gold in Beijing’s World Championships.

This year will see Ennis-Hill head to Rio as she looks to retain her Olympic title and she will begin that journey with the 60m hurdles in Scotland while fellow ‘Super Saturday’ winners Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford will also be in action.

“I am really looking forward to competing in the Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix – this fixture always kick-starts my year,” said Ennis-Hill.

“Training is going well and it will be good to get out there and compete with some great athletes and really test myself.

“Olympic year is a big year for all of us and the first competition brings with it trepidation and excitement.”

Andy Murray has set his sights on history as he looks to overtake some of tennis’ greats and win a fifth Queen’s title this summer.

The 28-year-old has confirmed that he will defend the title he won in 2015, adding to his victories from 2009, 2011 and 2013.

That brought him level with Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, Boris Becker and John McEnroe in the all-time standings during the open era.

And the world number two admits he would love to add another crown to his collection in 2016.

"If I could win it for a fifth time it would be amazing," said Murray. "The names that have won it four times - they are all great tennis players."

Two-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome says he is more motivated than ever after extending his Team Sky contract until the end of 2018.

Froome will be looking to add to his Tour titles that he won in 2013 and 2015 this year as well as looking for success with Team GB at Rio 2016.

"I am more motivated than I have ever been and I have got big targets for this Olympic year,” said Froome.

The 30-year-old has been with Team Sky since 2010 and form GB Cycling chief Dave Brailsford, who is now Team Sky boss, says he is delighted to have Froome on board for the future.

"Chris is not only one of the most talented and dedicated riders in the world, he is also a fantastic ambassador for the sport.

"We are proud to have him as our team leader. He is hungry for more success and we will help him achieve it."

British number two Aljaz Bedenehas been forced to retire from the ASB Classic in Auckland after picking up an injury midway through his clash with Sam Querrey.

The 26-year-old took the first set from the American in his opening match in New Zealand on a tie break 7-6 (7-5).

However Querrey had fought back and took the second set 7-6 (10-8) before Bedene withdrew with the third set at 2-1 in favour of the American.

Dan Evans and James Ward both came through their opening qualifiers for the Australian Open and move closer to the main draw.  The Grand Slam kicks off on Monday and Evans edged his was closer with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 triumph over Luca Vanni of Italy.  Ward meanwhile saw off the challenge of Canada's Peter Polansky in straight sets 7-6 (8-6) 6-4.
