Olympic24: England sevens settle for fourth at Wellington World Series

There’s a medal near miss for England at the rugby sevens World Series and history is made by Jamie Murray in Melbourne. Here’s our review of the last 24 hours:

Simor Amor’s England rugby sevens team settled for fourth at the World Series event in Wellington.

After a 33-7 quarter-final win over Argentina, they paid the price for a succession of missed tackles as hosts New Zealand - the eventual winners - won their semi-final 25-5.

And Fiji were always better value in the third place play-off, winning 24-12.

England are fourth in the overall standings - behind South Africa, Fiji and New Zealand - after three events.

And they’ll be determined to finally make the medals next weekend in Sydney, where they will take on USA, Japan and Wales in the group stages.

Jamie Murray admits the support of the team around him made his Australian Open success possible after becoming the first Brit for 82 years to win the men’s doubles title in Melbourne.

Murray and Brazilian partner Bruno Soares came from a set behind to beat Canada’s Daniel Nestor and Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Emily Godfrey turned her attentions April's European Championships after pipping Rebekah Tiler to the -69kg title at the English Weightlifting Championships.

Both lifted 210kg but Godley's lighter bodyweight meant she took the gold medal.

Along with British record holder Zoe Smith, Godley usually competes in the -63kg category, and will now focus on Norway and the European Championships.

Britain are yet to qualify any weightlifters for the 2016 Rio Olympics and Godley is keen to change all that.

"I've only been back in training for four weeks after Christmas, so to come away with a personal best total, I'm really happy," she told BBC Sport.
