Olympic24: Cavendish wins first Le Tour yellow jersey as Murray storms to victory at Wimbledon

Mark Cavendish wins his first yellow jersey on opening day of Tour de France as Andy Murray progresses to fourth round at Wimbledon. Here’s our review of the last 24 hours in Olympic sport:

Mark Cavendish will wear the Tour de France’s iconic yellow jersey for the first time on Sunday after winning stage one of the race into Utah Beach.

The Manx Missile launched a vicious sprint to pip Marcel Kittel and world champion Peter Sagan on the line at the end of the 188km run from Mont-Saint-Michel.

Coming into the race Cavendish was unsure of his form after spending much of the year training on the track as he looks to win a first Olympic medal in the omnium at Rio.

The break from the road seemed to have done him good though and the 31-year-old, notorious for being a slow starter in Grand Tours, raced past his rivals in the closing 100m with a kick reminiscent of his famous wins on the Champs Elysees in Paris.

The Dimension Data rider now has 27 Tour de France stage wins to his name, one behind Frenchman Bernard Hinault, and will pull on the leader’s yellow jersey for the very first time.

After beating Australia’s John Millman in straight sets, Olympic champion Andy Murray insists Novak Djokovic’s loss will mean nothing unless he makes the final of Wimbledon.

Murray was made to work by the 27-year-old, but came through to win 6-3 7-5 6-2 and book a meeting against either the enigmatic Nick Kyrgios or the big forehand of Feliciano Lopez.

After Murray’s win all the talk was of Novak Djokovic’s shock loss to America’s Sam Querrey on Court One but the 2013 champion refused to accept the result would make his route to a second title any easier.

“I need to reach the final for that result to have any bearing whatsoever on my performance at all,” said the 29-year-old.

Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee insists he can still get better after racing to a second consecutive World Triathlon Series victory in Stockholm.

Brownlee finished ten seconds ahead of younger brother Jonathan, the second successive one-two for the siblings after the same result at the last round in Leeds.

Alistair broke away from his brother in the final kilometre after the pair had broken the rest of the pack with a hard ride and blistering pace on the run.

With less than seven weeks until the men’s race at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Alistair said he is close to top form.

“I feel like overall my performances have been good, I just need to run about a minute faster, which I think I can do in the next six weeks.

“If I can move my running on that much then I’ll be at my best and that will be my best chance of winning an Olympic medal.”

Nathan Bailey and Pam Clark were named British trampoline champions on Saturday, in what proved to be an extremely close battle in the women’s event.

Clark took the women’s title with a score of 153.865 points to win her first British senior gold, ahead of Bryony Page in second with 153.34 and Kat Driscoll in third with 153.095.

Bailey claimed gold with a score of 163.38, with Luke Strong picking up silver with 161.855 points and Lewis Bartlett finishing third with 152.855.

“It’s hard to put into words how I feel,” said Clark. “This is incredible not just winning the British title but winning in such an important year feels very special.

“You just want to perform to your best, there was a lot of pressure but you train so hard and practice so much and to have it pay off on a day like today is amazing.

“This medal isn’t just mine though, it’s everyone who supports me who deserve all the credit.”

The GB Lions were crowned champions at Sevens and the City on Saturday night after beating the GB Royals 27-14 at Allianz Park.

Both teams won all four of their pool matches, beating Samurai and France in the semi-finals to set up an all GB final, with just over two weeks until the Rio 2016 Olympic Games squad is announced.

Head coach Simon Amor said: “It has been an amazing day with some outstanding individual and team performances.

“In the last game, with the Lions and the Royals going toe to toe, the competitive edge and the quality of the rugby was of the highest level and I’m absolutely delighted."
