Olympic24: Brash ruled out of Rio as Team GB learn rugby sevens foes

Showjumper Scott Brash will miss the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with his top two rides nursing injuries while the draws for the rugby sevens pool stages have been announced. Here's our review of the last 24 hours:

Scott Brash will be unable to defend his Olympic showjumping title after being ruled out of the running for selection for Rio 2016.

Brash was the top-ranked showjumper in the world last year and is still Team GB’s leading rider in the global standings but his top two rides – Hello Sanctos (owned by Lady Kirkham and Lord and Lady Harris) and Hello M’Lady (owned by Lady Kirkham and Lady Harris) – picked up minor injuries at the start of the season and will not be fit for Rio.

The 30-year-old was part of Team GB’s gold medal-winning showjumping team at London 2012 and looked likely to be selected for Rio, meaning he was understandably disappointed at being ruled out.

“We are extremely disappointed that we are unable to help Team GB in their quest to win another team gold medal at this year’s Olympics,” read a statement released by Brash, Lord and Lady Harris and Lord and Lady Kirkham.

“We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of Team GB every success in Rio.”

Team GB’s men’s rugby seven side have been drawn alongside New Zealand, Kenya and Japan in Pool C for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Rugby sevens is making its Olympic debut in Rio with Team GB consisting of players from England, Scotland and Wales – who compete as separate teams on the international circuit.

New Zealand retained the World Cup in the XV-man code last autumn while Kenya won their first World Rugby Sevens Series event by triumphing at the Singapore leg earlier this year and boast the all-time leading sevens try scorer Collins Injera among their ranks.

Meanwhile, Team GB’s women are also in Pool C and face clashes with Canada, Brazil and Japan.

Team GB now officially have more than 200 athletes heading to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after 32 hockey players booked their tickets to Brazil. Eight of the women’s team who won bronze at London 2012 return with Hannah MacLeod, Georgie Twigg, Laura Unsworth and Nicola White all included while Helen and Kate Richardson-Walsh are set for their fourth Games appearances and Alex Danson and Crista Cullen will make their third.

For the men, Barry Middleton will make his fourth Olympic Games appearance while Ashley Jackson returns for his third Games after appearing at Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Perhaps it was the gathering gloom above but Andy Murray was in no mood to hang around at Wimbledon on Tuesday

It started raining almost as soon as the world No.2 left Centre Court, after brushing aside the challenge of British rival Liam Broady at the All England Club. This was a textbook display of tournament tennis, straight sets and straightforward, no dramas and no sweat.  He wrapped up the first two sets in less than an hour and finally closed out the 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 victory in just one hour and 43 minutes to book a second-round clash with Yen Hsun-Lu – the player who famously beat him in the first round at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Johanna Konta is on course to win her first singles match at Wimbledon to underline her new-found status and deliver on the accompanying expectation.

Konta is the first British woman to be seeded at the All England Club since Jo Durie in 1984, capping a remarkable 12 months which includes reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open and earning Team GB selection for next month’s Olympic Games in Rio.

She wasn’t hanging about against Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig, dropping just one game in a first set that lasted 23 minutes and leading 2-1 in the second when rain stopped play, with the match to be completed on Wednesday.

And wildcard Tara Moore became the first British woman to win this year with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Alison Van Uytvanck, her first Grand Slam victory, setting up a clash with Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat former world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki.  Check out all the reaction Sportsbeat 2016
