Newenham adamant GB Shooters can flourish under new coaches

Tim Newenham insists Britain’s double trap shooters will move forward after the appointment of Martin Barker and John Bellamy in official coaching roles.

Barker is to become men’s double trap coordinator for senior athletes and Bellamy coordinator for juniors with the appointments following Ian Coley’s retirement earlier this year.

Double trap was introduced to the Olympic programme at Atlanta 1996 with Richard Faulds winning gold for Britain at Sydney 2000 and Peter Wilson following suit at London 2012 last summer.

And Newenham, athlete high performance manger with British Shooting, is certain even greater heights can be reached as Barker and Bellamy settle into their posts.

He said: “We are really pleased to welcome Martin and John to the team, they are in position to move double trap forward and develop the system of all three shotgun disciplines training together at camps.

“They got off to a flying start organising double trap at the training camp at Beverley over three days, working alongside trap and skeet coaches and athletes, where we also built in education sessions to help raise understanding and performances.”
