Murray to make competitive return at Queen's Club

Three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray is to make his competitive return from hip surgery next week in the Fever-Tree Championships at Queen's Club.

Britain's former world number one is in line to compete for the first time in almost 12 months after coming through a practice session in London on Friday.

The 31-year-old will play Australian world number 24 Nick Kyrgios in the first round which begins on Monday.

"It’s obviously exciting,” said Murray. “I have always enjoyed playing here [Queen’s].

"Last year was kind of the start of a tough year for me. I physically didn’t feel good coming in last year and that was tough.

"But I’ve obviously got lots of great memories from here, from winning the tournament and playing here the first time when I was 18.

"I’m sure I’ll have the same nerves and stuff as I did all those years ago.

"Having missed eleven months, coming back I’m expecting to be very nervous when I go back out there.

"But it’s a cool place to come back."

It's been a frustrating 12 months for the Scot who was last in competitive action at Wimbledon last July, where he limped through a five-set defeat to American Sam Querrey in the quarter-finals.

Murray had surgery in Australia in January in hope of returning for the grass-court season but opted to pull out of this week’s Libema Open in the Netherlands.

The British player is a five-time Queen's champion and has practiced at the west-London club this week, also playing two sets against British number three Cameron Norrie on Friday.

He added: "I wanted to feel how I felt the following day after playing a couple of sets with Cam Norrie.

"I got tested by my physios to make sure I hadn’t stiffened up and lost any range of motion in my hip which can happen when you’re tired and the hip’s a bit angry.

"That wasn’t the case. That was all positive and I pulled up pretty well from that, so then I decided to go for it.

“It’s obviously 11 months since I last competed. So I’m looking forward to it.

"There are a lot of doubts though as well when you’ve not played for a long time.

"Coming back from injury you’re always kind of second guessing yourself.

"You never know exactly when you’re going to be ready, but I’m looking forward to getting back out there and competing, and hopefully playing well."

Elsewhere in the draw, Spanish reigning champion Feliciano Lopez will play Belgium’s David Goffin, Croatian top seed Marin Cilic takes on Fernando Verdasco and second seed Grigor Dimitrov faces Bosnia’s Damir Dzumhur.

Serbia's 12-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic will play a qualifier whilst world number four Juan Martin del Potro has decided to rest ahead of Wimbledon, which begins on 2 July.
