Murray draws Duckworth in US Open first round

Andy Murray’s first Grand Slam match in 14 months will be against Australia’s James Duckworth in the US Open first round.

The 2012 champion has missed much of the last 12 months because of a hip injury and decided to pull out of Wimbledon last month due to a lack of match fitness.

But with a run to the Washington Open quarter-finals and an appearance at the Cincinnati Masters under his belt since then, the double Olympic champion is ready to return to the sport’s biggest stage in New York.

Like Murray, Duckworth has suffered his own injury problems for much of the season and has dropped to 445 in the world.

Feliciano Lopez or Fernando Verdasco will face the winner in the second round, while 2009 US Open winner and third seed Juan Martin Del Potro potentially lies in wait in the third round.

In the second Great Britain v Australia match-up, Cameron Norrie has been drawn against Jordan Thompson.

Elsewhere, British number one Kyle Edmund, who reached the semi-final at the Australian Open in January, faces a tough task against Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi.

In the women’s draw, British number one Johanna Konta has been handed a tough draw against France’s sixth seed Caroline Garcia.

Konta has dropped to 46 in the world this season and is no longer seeded. She could be joined in the first round by Heather Watson and Katie Swan – who are both in qualifying. Sportsbeat 2018
