British divers Chris Mears and Jack Laugher boosted their Glasgow 2014 medal ambitions after finishing as the highest Commonwealth pair in the 3m synchro final at the World Cup in Shanghai.
Turning out in their first major international as a pair having only began diving together competitively at the London World Series in April, Mears and Laugher placed fifth overall with a total score of 411.81.
Mears and Laugher were in the medal positions throughout the final but a drop in their last dive pushed them out as Chinese duo Yue Lin and Yuan Cao took gold with an overall total of 461.31.
Germans Stephan Feck and Patrick Hausding were second, Russians Evgeny Kuznetsov and Ilia Zakharov third and Americans Samuel Dorman and David Boudia fourth meaning Mears and Laugher were the highest Commonwealth pair.
Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow meanwhile were also fifth in the 10m synchro but the fourth best Commonwealth pair behind Malaysia, Canada and Australia with Chinese duo Ruolin Chen and Huixia Liu the winners.
