Kinsella takes first senior medal on home soil

Great Britain's Alice Kinsella admitted she had surprised even herself by winning bronze in the women's all-around event at the Gymnastics World Cup.

In front of her home crowd in Birmingham, the 17-year-old produced four impressive clean runs on the vault, the bars, the beam and the floor.

That was good enough for third spot on the podium – her first-ever senior medal at an individual major championship.

And Kinsella – who will head to the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games next month, could not hide her delight afterwards. “I was just hoping to get the experience for the Commonwealths but to come here and get a medal; I don’t know what to say really,” she said.

“The crowd was amazing. They helped me through all of my routines, especially on floor.

“Going on to beam, I wasn’t actually that nervous, I was just thinking about what I needed to do and to do it the same as I do in training.

“The experiences I’ve had over the last year or so helped me to come out today and do my best and get the medal. My confidence is definitely better after this and I can’t wait to get out there now (to the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games.”

Russia’s Angelina Melnikova won gold, while silver went to Margzetta Frazier of the United States.

It was less good news for Amy Tinkler – who took bronze on the floor at Rio 2016 – who had to pull out after injuring her wrist in the warm-up.
