Kenny speeds into semi-final

Great Britain's Jason Kenny is set to continue his quest for Olympic cycling sprint gold after advancing to Monday's semi-finals at the London 2012 velodrome.

The 24-year-old from Bolton, selected ahead of 2008 Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy, claimed a convincing 2-0 quarter-final win over Malaysia's Awang Azizulhasni.

Moments later Kenny discovered his last-four opponent would be Trinidad's sole representative at the velodrome after Njisane Nicholas Phillip recorded a 2-0 quarter-final win over Denis Dmitriev of Russia.

Three-time world champion Gregory Bauge of France, who beat Kenny in April's final in Melbourne, advanced at the expense of Robert Forstemann of Germany, claiming a 2-0 win, to join the Briton in the last four. The Frenchman and Kenny were on a final collision course.

Bauge was set to meet Shane Perkins in the last four after the Australian beat Jimmy Watkins of the United States 2-0 in their last-eight contest.

Olympic team pursuit champion Ed Clancy fell down to fifth position ahead of the final discipline of the men's omnium after a 10th-placed finish in the 15-kilometre, 60-lap scratch race.

Clancy was seeking individual glory after team success on Friday but was in a battle for a minor medal after a disappointing display in the penultimate event.

The 27-year-old Yorkshireman's total rose to 29, four points off leader Lasse Hansen of Denmark.

Hansen was paying so much close attention to the Briton in the scratch race, won by Canada's Zach Bell, that he collided with Clancy's rear wheel on the 45th lap and tumbled down the track.

The Dane was given five laps' grace to return to the bike and responded by claiming a lap which could ultimately prove decisive.
