Halsall misses out on medal

Fran Halsall was fifth in the 50 metres freestyle as Ranomi Kromowidjojo claimed the swimming sprint double on the final night of competition at the Aquatics Centre.

The 22-year-old was desolate after coming sixth in the 100 metres freestyle in which she coveted a medal more than in any other event.

Qualifying fifth fastest from Friday night's semi-final, the 22-year-old was in contention for a medal all the way but she missed out on the touch in 24.47 seconds.

Later on, Great Britain came eighth as the United States won the women's 4x100 metres medley relay in a new world record.

It was always a tall order for the quartet - made up of Gemma Spofforth, Siobhan-Marie O'Connor, Ellen Gandy and Halsall - to challenge for medals.

Fifth after Spofforth's opening backstroke leg, they fell behind on the breaststroke and could not make any inroads on those ahead of them.

They touched in three minutes 59.46 as the United States lowered China's world record by 0.14secs to 3mins 52.05secs.
