Hall finishes eighth in Doha to confirm place among world elite

James Hall is taking his turn in the spotlight after fighting his way to eighth place in the men's all-around final at the gymnastics World Championships in Doha.

Brinn Bevan also placed in a commendable 18th as the British gymnasts confirmed their places amongst the world’s elite competitors.

Russia’s four-time European champion Artur Dalaloyan took gold on a tie-break, with China’s defending champion Xiao Ruoteng having to settle for silver and Nikita Nagornyy claiming bronze.

For Great Britain, though, Hall announced his arrival amongst the sport’s very best gymnasts – equalling or upgrading four of his six scores from qualifying to total 84.298.

“I think a lot of people have the expectation of me to be the steady guy - the rock of the team - but I’ve done that job for myself,” said Hall, 23. “Eighth in the world is incredible.

“I fight for every single tenth of a point in every routine, I always strive to do my very best and that’s what I’ve done – I can hardly believe it.

“I was completely focused on my routines and built in confidence as the competition went on. To be amongst the best gymnasts in the world feels amazing.”

The result means Hall, who won all-around silver at the 2017 European Championships, has genuine hope of emerging as a medal contender for Tokyo 2020.

Hall and Bevan were in the same group in the final, starting on pommel horse as Bevan fell, his compatriot started solidly with 13.666.

On the rings Hall put in another excellent performance to register 14.066, then matching his qualifying score of 14.366 with a 2.5 twisting vault.

Bevan finished with a strong floor routine to claim 18th but Hall’s impressive consistency continued to flow as scores of 14.500 (parallel bars), 13.600 (high bar) and 14.100 (floor) confirmed his top ten finish.

The competition continues on Thursday when Ellie Downie and Kelly Simm compete in the women's all-around final as Great Britain’s gymnastics continue their quest for medals.
