Gibbons rounds of Grand Prix season with another medal

Gemma Gibbons’ strong finish to the year continued as she picked up her second consecutive bronze at the Korean Grand Prix. The Olympic silver medallist has been in impressive form in the second half of the year, with four medals from the last four Grand Prix competitions, starting back with gold at the Ulaanbaatar Grand Prix.

The latest medal was the same colour she won at the Qingdao Grand Prix last weekend, and came after she beat Dutch judoka Guusje Steenhuis in the bronze-medal contest.

She had started the day by defeating Tiara Artha Garthia before following that up with a second-round win over Croatian Ivana Maranic to move into the quarter-finals.

Another victory followed over Spain’s Marta Tort Merino but Gibbons’ winning run came to an end at the semi-final stage against reigning Olympic champion Kayla Harrison of the USA.

But, having bounced back with victory over Steenhuis, the 28-year-old still had plenty to smile about after picking up further Olympic qualification points for Rio 2016.

"I'm really pleased to get another Grand Prix medal, especially after medalling last weekend,” she said.

“I was really pleased with the bronze match as I have never beaten the Dutch girl before."
