Gibbons earns historic bronze in Tokyo

Gemma Gibbons finished her 2015 on a high with a bronze medal at the Tokyo Grand Slam in Japan.

She finished third in the -78kg category, battling through with two tough comeback victories along the way.

A tricky opening victory over Hyunji Yoon set up a tie with 2015 Baku and Paris Grand Slam medallist Akari Ogata in round two.

Seemingly out of it heading into the final seconds, Gibbons produced a waza-ari before securing the ippon, to reach the quarter-final.

Defeat to Olympic champion Kayla Harrison in the last eight forced Gibbons into the repechage but she cruised past former world champion Mayra Aguiar to reach the bronze medal match.

There she took on Ruika Sato and after trailing early, Gibbons fought back to win and claim the bronze.

“I am really pleased with today’s result. I have always dreamt of getting a Tokyo Grand Slam medal and today I achieved that,” she said.

“It’s great to have medalled at all three tournaments on the Asia tour, a nice end to the year.”

Elite Performance Coach Jean-Paul Bell added: “Excellent all-round performance today! Great attacking judo and defeated strong opposition including throwing Aguiar the former World champion from Brazil.

“Lots of positives to take and things to reinforce for next year. This was her third medal after three weeks in Asia and a great way to end a strong year.”
