Games squads land team award

Team GB and Paralympics GB were jointly awarded the Team of the Year gong at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards after their inspirational performances at the London 2012 Games.

London 2012 saw the greatest-ever team performance at an Olympics or Paralympics by UK athletes.

Britain finished third in the Olympic medal table with 65. Only heavyweights United States and China collected more.

Paralympics GB also capitalised on home support to finished third in the medal table with 120 medals in total, 34 of them gold.

Cyclist Victoria Pendleton, who rounded off her career with a gold and silver in the velodrome this summer, said on behalf of the team: "The Olympics was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, an incredible atmosphere.

"It's wonderful to be presented with this award. There are so many people behind the scenes that help us get where we are, like friends, family and support staff."

Jonnie Peacock, who won the T44 men's 100 metres in the Paralympics, added: "This is for the thousands of support staff who help us."
